England have ‘a lot of hard work ahead’ after win over Serbia, says Gareth Southgate
Ukraine begin their Euro 2024 campaign on Monday afternoon, facing potentially one of the weakest sides at the tournament in Romania. That’s how it looks from an odds perspective, and indeed with the level that the squad has been playing at in club football, but the qualification campaign suggests something very different.
Romania topped their group unbeaten, ahead of Switzerland and Israel, qualifying for the Euros with just five goals conceded in their 10 fixtures. Even so, Ukraine, will feel they have the calibre of individuals and the tournament experience to see off their rivals and make a good start to Group E.
Ukraine themselves finished third in qualifying behind England and Italy, but came through the play-offs by beating Bosnia and Herzegovina away in the semis, before defeating Iceland at home in the final. Euro 2024: Romania vs Ukraine LIVE
Good morning and welcome to The Independent’s live coverage of Euro 2024 - today we head into Group E for the first time where Romania are taking on Ukraine first, followed by a clash between Belgium and Slovakia at 5pm BST.
Later on we’ll also be bringing you coverage of World Cup finalists France, in action against Austria in Group D - but first our focus is on the 2pm BST kick-off.
Ukraine reached the Euros via the play-off paths, beating Bosnia-Herzegovina and Iceland to do so, while Romania topped their qualifying group unbeaten to reach their first major tournament in eight years. They haven’t won a game at any tournament since 2000, though, so there’s plenty of history to rewrite for them yet.
