Where is Bryson DeChambeau from? Hometown, college and more to know about California roots

Bryson DeChambeau has recorded quite the resume for himself in his eight-year professional career.

The 2020 U.S. Open winner is one of golf's more polarizing figures, with his tacit support for former president Donald Trump and decision to join LIV Golf earning him plenty of rancor among golf fans. When he takes to the course, though, he tends to perform. DeChambeau has regularly neared the top of the Official World Golf Ranking since his 2016 debut. Such is life for a man with 12 wins to his name as a professional, eight of them coming in the PGA Tour.

Love him or hate him, DeChambeau is always expected to be buzzing near the top of the leaderboards during golf's grandest majors. Such a fate befell him once again at this year's U.S. Open, where he finds himself dueling with Rory McIlroy and Patrick Cantlay for the top prize.

If you want to know where DeChambeau is going, you have to know where he came from. Here's a look at DeChambeau's roots, which start in California but stretch deep into Texas soil, too.

Where is Bryson DeChambeau from?

DeChambeau hails from Clovis, Calif., just outside Fresno. He came to prominence at Clovis East High School, the same school where PGA Tour golfer Derek Ernst attended.

Despite his California roots, DeChambeau's heart currently belongs to Dallas. He resides in Dallas, the city he has lived in since 2018. He did recently put his $3 million home up for sale, though, according to the Dallas Morning News.

Where did Bryson DeChambeau go to college?

DeChambeau attended Southern Methodist University, enrolling there from 2012-2015.

DeChambeau, a modern-day golf historian, cited Payne Stewart and Ben Hogan, two of the Mustangs' greatest products, as motivating factors for him to join the program. In a nod to the two golf icons, DeChambeau would regularly sport a flat cap.

While a member of SMU, DeChambeau racked up a number of honors — most notably, a national title in 2015. He departed the program ahead of the 2016 season after the Mustangs were handed a postseason ban for violating multiple rules revolving around recruiting and unethical conduct.

DeChambeau's national championship triumph wasn't the only trophy he hoisted in 2015. He added the U.S. Amateur title that summer, becoming one of just five golfers to win both tournaments in the same season alongside Jack Nicklaus (1961), Phil Mickelson (1990), Tiger Woods (1996), and Ryan Moore (2004).

When was the last time Bryson DeChambeau won a major?

DeChambeau's first and only major title came in 2020 when he captured the U.S. Open at Winged Foot Golf Club in Mamaroneck, New York. DeChambeau mounted a two-stroke comeback during the final round, taking the lead from Matthew Wolff on the fifth hole. DeChambeau controlled the pace for the remainder of the day, posting a 6-under for the tournament and finishing six strokes better than Wolff. He was the only player to finish the tournament with a score under par.

DeChambeau has three top-five finishes in the PGA Championship, one sixth-place finish at the Masters, and one eighth-place finish at the Open Championship.

Bryson DeChambeau U.S. Open history

DeChambaeu still has some work to do if he wants to conquer each of the four crown jewels of men's professional golf. With one victory at the U.S. Open, though, he certainly has the pedigree to make magic happen sooner rather than later.
