Netherlands vs. Austria final score, result, highlights: Sabitzer wins thriller to seal top spot in Euro 2024 Group D

Austria emerged as the surprise winners of Euro 2024 Group D after claiming a 3-2 victory over the Netherlands at Berlin's Olympiastadion on Tuesday.

In one of the truly outstanding matches of these finals, Ronald Koeman's side twice came from a goal down to draw level only to lose thanks to a decisive strike from Borussia Dortmund's Marcel Sabitzer.

Donyell Malen's own goal gave Austria a first-half lead that was cancelled out by a stylish finish from Cody Gakpo early in the second. The excellent Memphis Depay made it 2-2 — VAR had to intervene to overturn an incorrect handball decision — after Romano Schmid had headed Austria back in front, and it seemed as though momentum was with the Oranje only for Sabitzer to rifle home the decisive third for Ralf Rangnick's entertaining side.

As a result, Austria topped the group, with France in second after their 1-1 draw with Poland, and the Netherlands third. All three will reach the next round.

Austria were ahead after only six minutes, Malen sliding in to turn Alexander Prass' low cross into his own net from 12 yards out. It was a finish of which the forward would have been proud had it been at the other end of the pitch; when Malen did find himself in the Austria box midway through the half, he scuffed a left-foot shot wide.

Rangnick's men have made a habit of strong first-half performances at these finals and were certainly the better side prior to the break here. Marko Arnautovic should have made it 2-0 but failed to connect with a high ball in the box after Bart Verbruggen had saved well from Marcel Sabitzer.

The Dutch had offered scant threat but promptly flew out of the blocks after the restart. Lutsharel Geertruida won back possession and triggered a swift break that ended with Gakpo side-footing home from Xavi Simons' pass barely a minute after kickoff.

Koeman's players seemed to have taken control but found themselves behind again just before the hour mark. With their first attack of the half, Schmid powered a header in off the foot of Stefan de Vrij to restore Austria's lead.

There was another twist to come. Koeman threw on Wout Weghorst in pursuit of an equaliser and the striker had a swift impact, heading the ball down for Depay to finish with a clever half-volley. The referee disallowed the strike for handball, but a VAR check showed that the ball did not hit any part of the forward's arm.

Again, the Dutch and their fans were buoyant; again, it didn't last. Substitute Christoph Baumgartner slid a superb pass through a static defence, and Sabitzer blasted a fine finish into the top corner with his left foot.

Weghorst headed over with a diving effort after a fine cross from Geertruida, but the Oranje could not muster a third comeback. They will progress as one of the best third-place teams, meaning a potentially tougher Round of 16 match awaits. Austria, against the odds, go through as group winners to face the runners-up of Group F.
