Tide may be shifting to Lyle Alzado and his impact on the Broncos
Good morning, Broncos Country!
Over the course of our 50 greatest Denver Broncos series, there’s been a pleasant surprise to float to the top.
Lyle Alzado seems to have finally been accepted and appreciated for his contributions to the organization. Just five years ago, this was not the case. There was still a grudge against one of the truly great players in the franchise’s history.
And to an extent, it makes sense. He abused steroids, he thought he was worth more than the Broncos offered, and he played for the hated Raiders.
But that still doesn’t diminish his impact on the field and the community, which was larger than his already larger-than-life persona.
So when the staff at Mile High Report put our respective lists together of the 50 greatest Broncos, I was surprised to see Alzado on the list, even if it was No. 36. I think he should have been way higher. For clarity, I had him at No. 12. There is no Orange Crush defense without Alzado.
However, I was even more pleasantly surprised to see the response from the MHR community.
As said in the story, it’s time for bygones to be bygones.
Alzado has been dead for over 30 years. It’s time to appreciate and celebrate his impact on the Broncos, Denver, and the state of Colorado.
It’s also time to put him in the Ring of Fame.
