Spurs Could Pursue Maxey in Free Agency
The San Antonio Spurs entered the 2024 NBA offseason looking to add as much talent as possible in as many ways as possible. As the NBA Draft gets closer and closer, the Spurs have been linked to every available player, although the point guard position remains the most important.
The Spurs have been linked to the best point guards on the trade market and in the draft, and Chris Paul trade rumors have swirled around San Antonio. However, there is a universe where one of the NBA's best young established point guards ends up in the Silver and Black. Tyrese Maxey is a free agent, and could conceivably leave the Philadelphia 76ers.

The Spurs have the cap space to offer him the maximum offer possible, which would be $151.6 million over four seasons.
Maxey was a first-time All-Star last season and was the Most Improved Player, averaging 25.9 points, 6.2 assists, and shot 37.3 percent from three. He kept the Sixers afloat amid Joel Emiid's injury-riddled season and was a big reason why they made the postseason.
At only 23 years old, it's safe to say he's one of the brightest stars in the league. Pairing him with Victor Wembanayma would immediately solve a lot of the Spurs' struggles, as he is a high-volume scoring guard who has experience setting up an All-NBA center.
While the Spurs are an appealing destination for free agents and can offer Maxey as much as anyone else, the Sixers have bird rights and can offer him a much larger $204.5 million contract over five seasons. That's an extra three million per year and has an added year to the contract, so despite reports that stars are willing to take pay cuts to play next to Wembanyama, adding Maxey might be a stretch.
That said, the Spurs should show that they are aggressive in the free-agent market and make a show of publically pursuing Maxey to show a commitment to winning and make themselves an obvious free-agent destination moving forward.
