For the 2024 Iowa Corn 350, Taranto is high on Brad Keselowski, even though he's a longshot at 12-1. While the Cup Series is making its debut at Iowa Speedway, Keselowski is very familiar with the track. The 40-year-old from Michigan made seven starts there while competing in the Xfinity Series and finished eighth or better every time.
Keselowski's debut at Iowa couldn't have gone better, as he edged Kyle Busch by 0.515 seconds in August 2009 to capture the checkered flag. The 2012 Cup Series champion followed with fourth- and third-place finishes at the track in Newton before winning each of his next two outings there. Keselowski made his final two starts at Iowa in 2016, when he was third in June and eighth a month later. He has performed well in the Cup Series this year, registering seven top-fives and eight top-10s in 16 races while also ending his 110-start winless streak with a victory at Darlington in May.
Another surprise: Taranto is fading Denny Hamlin, even though he's one of the favorites. The 43-year-old Floridian made an early exit last Sunday at Sonoma after he experienced engine trouble after only two laps. The misfortune ended Hamlin's streak of five consecutive top-five finishes that began with his third victory of the season on April 28 at Dover.
Hamlin has performed exceptionally well on short tracks this year. His first two wins came at Bristol and Richmond, and he has finished in the top three in five of the Cup Series' last six short-track races.
