The San Francisco 49ers are facing challenges in securing a new contract for wide receiver Brandon Aiyuk. Negotiations have slowed, and there's a noticeable lack of optimism about reaching an agreement soon.

"They're going to see what happens over the next six weeks leading into training camp," Reported ESPN's Jeremy Fowler. "The 49ers want Aiyuk long-term in the fold but so far, they have not been willing to show that they're going to meet the market of wide receiver, which we're seeing these massive numbers. Amon-Ra St. Brown in Detroit $30 million, Justin Jefferson well above that. Aiyuk believes he's a top guy, and so, something's got to give. And so, he's worked himself into a top-10 receiver conversation. We'll see, not a lot of momentum right now. Not a lot of optimism."

Aiyuk is entering the final year of his rookie contract, earning $14.1 million—a figure that is quite low compared to the current market for top-tier wide receivers. With players like Amon-Ra St. Brown and Justin Jefferson securing deals worth $30 million or more annually, Aiyuk believes he deserves a similar payday.

Reports indicate that the 49ers recently offered Aiyuk a contract in the $26 million range. However, this offer hasn't been enough to move the needle in negotiations. The team has expressed a desire to keep Aiyuk long-term, but so far, they haven't shown a willingness to meet the market's high demands for elite receivers.

General Manager John Lynch has publicly stated that the franchise values Aiyuk and wants him to remain with the team for his entire career. Despite these assurances, there has been little progress in contract discussions.

This situation is reminiscent of Deebo Samuel's contract standoff with the 49ers in 2022. Samuel eventually signed a three-year extension after initially requesting a trade. However, the market for wide receivers has shifted significantly since then. Samuel's $23.9 million average salary, which once ranked eighth among receivers, would now require an offer of at least $25 million to maintain a similar standing.

With the regular season still a few months away, there's time for both sides to reach an agreement. However, it appears that more movement from the 49ers' front office will be necessary to secure Aiyuk's future with the team.
