Mahomes Has 'Good Connection' With New WR, Says Andy Reid
Despite the Kansas City Chiefs claiming yet another Super Bowl win, the franchise improved the roster this offseason by getting Patrick Mahomes more weapons.
As such, Marquise Brown was signed in free agency as the Chiefs got Mahomes a home-run threat he hasn't had since Tyreek Hill switched to the Miami Dolphins.
But when a new player comes into a settled offense, it will take time to adjust and learn the system. For head coach Andy Reid, Brown and Mahomes are already on a good wavelength, which starts with the pair communicating well on the field.
“As a coach, you look for the communication part of it,” Reid said. “Are they willing to share what they’re thinking with one another? They’ve got a good connection with that part of it. They’re talking and once Patrick knows what Hollywood’s thinking and Hollywood knows where Patrick physically can get the ball to, not as much depth, but location of the field then that’s a good thing.”
Brown had a solid enough 2023 season with the Arizona Cardinals, having 51 receptions for 574 yards and four touchdowns.
The speedy receiver will hope to improve on that in an offense that Mahomes described as getting him back to his "old days" of pushing the ball down the field, which will scare opposing defenses.
With the Chiefs already having a solid run game with Isiah Pacheco and weapons in Travis Kelce and Rashee Rice, the franchise added Brown and the fastest player in combine history in Xavier Worthy, who ran a 4.21 40-yard dash.
Kansas City's OTAs and minicamp have now come and gone, and Mahomes' connection with Brown is already looking good. But the real proof will be in training camp. If the pair clicks as many expect, then the Chiefs' attempts at claiming a third straight Super Bowl look pretty good.
