Alan Titchmarsh wife’s health warning as green-fingered star banned from huge TV show

Despite being on our screens for more than 40 years, Alan Titchmarsh's wife has banned him from going on a major TV show.

The green-fingered star, 75, who has guided gardeners since 1983 when he rocked up on the BBC's Chelsea Flower Show, is one of the country's most popular presenters.

However, we won't be seeing him strut his stuff on BBC's other jewel in the crown, Strictly Come Dancing, any time soon because his wife, Alison has told him he can't go on it.

With his decades of screen experience, many thought Alan would be a shoo-in for Strictly, however, after revealing the Beeb has asked him a staggering six times to strut his stuff on the dance floor, the presenter said he'd be advised against it by his wife, who is 'worried about his knees'.

Speaking to Saga magazine, Alan said: "Alison was a dance tutor and she is convinced my knees wouldn’t stay the course." It's not just his health that prevented the gardening guru from taking part in the BBC 1 show. "On top of that, it is a huge commitment; you start in September and you might be there until Christmas," the star added, concluding: "There’s too much other stuff I need to be getting on with."

Despite being in relatively good health for his age, the Ground Force star, who was recently invited to the Foundation Awards ceremony by King Charles, has previously spoken about "taking tablets every day" amid fears that he might "die relatively young".

The admission came following his dad’s death aged just 62. Alan shared that many of the men in his family have faced the same fate due to heart disease.

In September 2014, the TV gardener told Yours magazine: "I’m on statins. I wish I wasn’t. I don’t like the thought of taking tablets every day, but I’m following my doctor’s advice. He thinks it’s a good idea."

Explaining his feelings as he continued: "The thing is, the men in my family have had a tendency to die from heart disease at a relatively young age. My dad, for instance, died suddenly in 1986 from a heart attack, aged just 62." The gardener also told the magazine that he has: "Stabbing pains in the back from carrying paving slabs and large posts."

The green-fingered guru may be synonymous with trowels and tarpaulin, however in 2009 Alan found himself with the unlikely label of sex symbol.

In news no-one saw coming, the Yorkshireman was slap bang at the centre of racy rumours surrounding his Madam Tussauds waxwork, which was first unveiled in 2001. Following a cheeky edit on Wikipedia, the online entry informed fans that Alan's likeness was 'one of the most fondled' at the museum after Brad Pitt's - with amorous ladies covering his waxen cheeks with lusty lipstick stains.

A spokesperson for the tourist attraction in London purportedly said: "Oh, yes, Alan gets kissed so often that we regularly take his head off for a clean." In the same entry, it was claimed that Alan was a sex expert about to regale the world with his very own guide to the Karma Sutra.

As per the Daily Express, Alan, who married his wife Alison in 1975 after meeting at an amateur dramatics class, rubbished the wild whispers at the time, but admitted the supposed attentions given to his waxwork were 'very flattering'. He added: "As for claims I am writing a book about the Kama Sutra – absolute rubbish! I've got a new series of gardening guides coming out, that's it."
