varicose veins causes: doctor shares common habits that can make the condition worse

Varicose veins is a condition wherein tiny valves inside blood vessels don’t function well which eventually causes the blood to flow backwards. This causes them to swell. The condition usually affects the veins in the legs and it is because standing or walking can increase the pressure in the veins of your legs.

For some people, the condition might just be a cosmetic concern, however, for others, it might cause pain and discomfort. Mayo Clinic says that sometimes, varicose veins can lead to more serious health problems.

Usually, the treatment for the condition involves exercising, raising legs when sitting or lying down or wearing compression stockings. However, the condition can also be treated by identifying the cause of the condition. There are certain daily habits that can aggravate your varicose veins.

Here, take a look at some habits that can worsen varicose veins, as explained by a doctor.

Dr Mark Bratby, medical director of UK clinic Veincentre, said to express.co.uk, “Summer can be particularly challenging for those with varicose veins. Heat and lifestyle choices can significantly impact vein health.”

Dr Bratby says that there are four habits that can cause or worsen varicose veins.

Dehydration

This is a common problem that a lot of people suffer from during summer. He said, “When you’re dehydrated, your blood becomes thicker, this may worsen symptoms from your varicose veins.”

He advised that one should drink plenty of water throughout the day, atleast eight glasses daily and increase the intake if they’re active or spending time in the sun.

Prolonged exposure to heat

High temperatures can cause your veins to dilate which might make it harder for the blood to flow back to the heart. This dilation can lead to increased swelling and discomfort. Dr Bratby said, “To beat the heat, I recommend seeking shade, using fans and minimising prolonged sun exposure.

“Opting for lightweight, breathable clothing can also work wonders in keeping your body temperature down.”

Eating salty foods

When you consume high amounts of salt, it can lead to water retention, which eventually increases pressure on veins. This causes more swelling and discomfort for those with varicose veins. Dr Bratby said that one should reduce their salt intake by eating fresh, unprocessed foods and using herbs and spices for flavour instead of salt.

Prolonged sitting or standing

When you’re sitting or standing for prolonged periods of time, it can add pressure on your veins which might aggravate the condition and cause discomfort. Dr Bratby says that one should take breaks to walk around when they’re sitting for extended periods. “If you're standing, try to shift your weight frequently or use a footrest to alternate legs,” he said.

Dr Bratby also shared ways to reduce the discomfort and alleviate the pain.

He said, “Elevating your legs above heart level for 15 to 20 minutes a few times a day can help improve blood flow.

“Regular low-impact exercises like walking, swimming, or cycling can also promote better circulation. Additionally, wearing compression stockings can support veins and improve blood flow, especially if you have to stand or sit for long periods.

“By being mindful of these habits and making simple changes, you can significantly reduce the impact of varicose veins and enjoy a more comfortable summer.”
