4 Restaurants and Bars to Try This Weekend in the Bay Area: June 14
As we head into the weekend, Eater SF editors have compiled a list of recommendations to answer one of the most persistent and, arguably, pressing questions of the day: “Where should I eat?” Of course, we have several resources to help guide your dining and drinking decisions — for example, the San Francisco and East Bay heatmaps, which reflect the hottest new restaurants to try right now. But here we offer four suggestions of places to check out this weekend around the Bay Area. And if you’re looking for places to grab a drink, try these lists of the best new places to grab a cocktail in San Francisco and the East Bay.
For a solstice celebration: Hej Hej at Saluhall
Midsommar time is nearly here, and those looking for a local event to celebrate the summer solstice will want to head to San Francisco marketplace Saluhall on June 15 and 16. From 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday, chef Emilia Eudailey of Hej Hej will prepare a three-course meal of Swedish dishes, including a crispy garlic potato with dill aioli and mini Swedish meatballs with tangy pickles, plus a build-your-own Swedish hot dog bar and more. Alongside the food, Saluhall will also host activities for kids, along with a DIY flower crown pop-up by Urban Virgo Creative. Tickets for the event are $55 and available via saluhallmarket.com. Hej Hej at Saluhall (945 Market Street, San Francisco) runs from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. on June 15 and 16.
For African and Caribbean groceries: Man Must Wak
Celebrated Oakland market Man Must Wak is known for its thorough selection of African and Caribbean ingredients — chef and James Beard Award winner Pierre Thiam is a fan — and now owner Queenkay Amamgbo is expanding the store to a second location near Lake Merritt. A grand opening celebration is being held on Saturday, June 15, from noon to 4 p.m at the new market location at 401 East 18th Street. There is a ribbon-cutting ceremony, followed by a mixer with food and beverages, and the market will also be open for shopping. “We’re well on our way to the best chapter of our story,” the team wrote in an Instagram post about the opening. The event is free, but the business asks that attendees RSVP via Eventbrite. Man Must Wak (401 East 18th Street, Oakland) opening party runs from noon to 4 p.m. on Saturday, June 15.
For a cooling treat: De La Creamery
It’s the middle of June, so we’re in an on-again, off-again relationship with June gloom, but don’t let the weather keep you from seeking out an ice cream treat. De La Creamery is teaming up with Berkeley Bowl West and local dairy company Clover Sonoma for a cafe pop-up on June 15 and 16. Expect flavors like horchata and Mexican chocolate, but we’re also eyeing the return of DLC’s ice cream nachos, which feature any scoop of ice cream over house-made, churro-style chips, plus a choice of sauce and topping. De La Creamery at Berkeley Bowl West (920 Heinz Avenue, Berkeley) runs from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. on June 15 and 16.
For a seasonal bagel moment: Hella Bagels
Strawberry enthusiasts will want to run to Albany’s Hella Bagels this weekend while they’re running the last of their “Strawberry Szn” special. Local strawberries, cucumbers, pickled red onions, and dill play together atop a spread of jalapeno-cilantro schmear, all on a bagel of your choice. Sweet, crunchy, chewy, seasonal, fresh, delightful — one can’t ask for more, in my opinion. Depending on how devoted you are to strawberries, you may want to swing by before they run out. And peach enthusiasts, your time to shine is near: Owner Blake Hunter shares that a new peach-topped bagel launches next week. Hella Bagels, 1019 San Pablo Avenue, Albany
