Kate Middleton portrait sparks online debate and mixed reactions

A recently unveiled portrait of Kate Middleton, the Princess of Wales, has ignited a storm of opinions online.

This new artwork follows a similarly contentious portrait of her father-in-law, King Charles III.

KATE MIDDLETON’S PORTRAIT

The King’s portrait was revealed just a week earlier.

The portrait of Kate Middleton, Prince William’s wife, graces the cover of Tatler’s latest issue.

British-Zambian artist Hannah Uzor created the piece without Kate’s direct involvement, according to ABC.

He used over 189,000 photos to “capture her likeness,” according to the magazine.

KATE MIDDLETON’S ‘SOUL’

The portrait drew inspiration from Kate’s appearance at the first state banquet of King Charles’ reign in November 2022.

On that day she wore a stunning Jenny Packham gown and a bracelet from the late Queen Elizabeth II.

She complemented this with drop earrings that belonged to the late Princess Diana, according to Forbes.

Describing her creative process, Uzor explained she aimed to capture Kate’s “soul.”

She said, “It’s really important to capture the soul of the person, so I spent a lot of time looking at her pictures.

I also watched videos of her, seeing her with her family, and during diplomatic visits.”

THE PUBLIC REACTS TO THE KATE MIDDLETON PORTRAIT

Uzor’s extensive research included observing Kate in various settings. These ranged from rowing to visiting children in hospices.

“It has been really interesting for me to get a sense of who she is,” she added.

Despite Uzor’s meticulous efforts, the portrait has received mixed reviews, according to the Independent.

Some praise the artistic beauty, while others argue it fails to resemble Kate.

One Instagram user commented, “The painting is beautiful but does not look like the princess.”

Another echoed this sentiment, writing, “I don’t understand this painting. I don’t see a resemblance to the princess in any way.”

KING CHARLES PORTRAIT

The timing of Kate Middleton’s portrait release is notable. She has been absent from the public eye due to surgery and a subsequent cancer diagnosis.

This context may have intensified the public’s scrutiny of the artwork.

Adding fuel to the fire, the portrait of Kate follows the controversial unveiling of King Charles III’s portrait.

Painted by Jonathan Yeo it featured a striking red background.

The six-foot-tall artwork depicts Charles in the uniform of the Welsh Guards.

Unlike Kate’s portrait, Charles’ was completed with his direct involvement, including four sittings over two years.

A BREAK FROM TRADITION

Charles’ portrait also received a mixed reception just like Kate Middleton’s portrait.

Some appreciated its modern approach, while others found the red background jarring.

One commenter praised, “I think this is beautiful and such a break from the traditional portraits.”

In contrast, another remarked, “I’m sorry but his portrait looks like he’s in hell.”

A third added, “I would have loved this if it was any other colour than red.”

The similarities between the receptions of both portraits are striking.

THE MODERN MONARCHY

Both pieces intended to modernise the depiction of British royalty, yet both stirred debate among the public.

The juxtaposition of traditional expectations with contemporary artistic interpretations seems to be at the heart of the controversy.

Tatler’s choice to feature Uzor’s portrait of Kate Middleton highlights an evolving approach to royal imagery.

While some viewers embrace this change, others cling to more conventional representations.

As the debates rage on, one thing is certain: these portraits have successfully captured the public’s attention.

It has kept the conversation about the modern British monarchy very much alive.
