Benedict Cumberbatch lifts lid on his wild karaoke night with Olivia Colman and Amy Adams after the 2019 BAFTAs - where Melissa McCarthy joked she'd 'kill him' if he sang well

Benedict Cumberbatch has lifted the lid on his wild karaoke night with his friends Olivia Colman, Amy Adams and Melissa McCarthy after the 2019 BAFTAs.

The Sherlock actor, 47, gave fans some insight into what happens at star-studded award shows after parties.

Speaking to Zoe Ball on Radio 2 on Wednesday, Benedict shared that there was a lively karaoke get together after Olivia's 2019 BAFTA Best Actress win for The Favourite.

He also revealed that Bridesmaids star Melissa, 53, was on his case about giving a good performance on the mic - as she joked she would 'kill him' if he ended up being a good singer.

'I went up to Melissa McCarthy and I went: "I'm really not very good" and she went "If you're, IF YOU'RE GOOD I'm gonna kill you,' he laughed. 'I went "I'm not and I'm terrified, all these people".'

Benedict said the epic karaoke session had happened after his friend Olivia picked up the big award - which he was watching in his bed on TV.

He said: 'I was in my pyjamas and they rang me and said "Where are you?" and I went "Ahh, okay'" and just literally got into the clothes, went out and ended up in a basement somewhere, I think in a hotel in Soho that was hosting an after party and there was a big karaoke thing, which Olivia loves and that cast of that brilliant film love.

'And there was an amazing bunch of people in there. We were all lined up, we all had to put a song in.

'I thought "Oh Christ, do I do this? I mean I've just woken? Alright, fine" - Young Americans (David Bowie) in.'

But just before Benedict's turn, he said, was Enchanted star Amy, 49 - whose career started out in musical theatre.

'I completely forgot obviously she started out in that world,' Benedict said of Amy's karaoke performance. 'And then it was my turn and I… (laughs) and I thought "God I've really got to go for it".

'Melissa McCarthy was just standing by a pillar going "I'm gonna kill you. I'm gonna kill you" because I did give it my all.'

The revelation comes after it was revealed friends Benedict and Olivia would be teaming up for a remake of The War of the Roses, playing a couple in the throes of an ugly divorce.

The pair will take on roles originated by Michael Douglas and Kathleen Turner.

Jay Roach (Bombshell) has come aboard to direct the 'reimagining' that is currently in development under the new title The Roses.

The Roses follows married couple Theo (Benedict) and Ivy (Olivia), said to be the 'picture-perfect' couple with great careers, kids and even an 'enviable sex life.'

'But underneath the façade of the perfect family is a tinderbox of competition and resentments that’s ignited when Theo’s professional dreams come crashing down,' the description added.

Jay will direct from a script by Poor Things writer Tony McNamara, who is said to have a different take on the subject than the original 1981 novel by Warren Adler.

Benedict will also produce the film through his SunnyMarch company, alongside Olivia with her South of the River Productions partners Ed Sinclair and Tom Carver.

'The Roses is a wildly funny, bigger than life, and yet deeply human story,' said Searchlight president Matthew Greenfield.

'With Jay at the helm, and Benedict and Olivia and Tony, we have a dream team bringing it to life,' he added.
