DepEd Condoles With Family Of Deceased Grade 5 Student In Cavite

The Department of Education (DepEd) has released a statement expressing their deep sorrow over the tragic death of a Grade 5 student in Alfonso, Cavite, following an accident at Sinaliw Malaki Elementary School on Monday, May 20, 2024.

The victim, a 12-year-old girl identified by alias Criszel, succumbed to her injuries after falling into a septic tank on the school premises. According to a report from the Police Regional Office 4A and the Alfonso Municipal Police Station, Criszel and three of her classmates were having lunch while sitting on a concrete chair above the septic tank when the structure suddenly collapsed, causing the children to fall into the tank. The victims were rushed to the hospital, where Criszel was declared dead on arrival. The three other students sustained minor injuries.

DepEd’s statement

In its statement, DepEd extended its heartfelt condolences to Criszel’s family and friends, emphasizing their commitment to support the bereaved during this difficult time. The department also said that the Schools Division Office has already reached out to the family to offer necessary assistance.

"We extend our sincerest condolences to the bereaved family and friends of the victim," the statement read. "The concerned Schools Division Office has reached out to the family for necessary assistance during this time of grief."

DepEd also assured the public that they are closely monitoring the condition of the injured students. School officials are collaborating with local government units to provide medical aid and psychological first aid to the affected learners.

"School officials are already in coordination with the local government units, for medical assistance and the conduct of psychological first aid to the affected learners," DepEd stated.

Furthermore, DepEd said that it is working with local authorities to ensure a thorough investigation into the incident. The department emphasized its commitment to uncovering the circumstances that led to the tragic accident and preventing similar incidents in the future.

DepEd Undersecretary Michael Poa said in a news report on Inquirer.net, "Pagdating sa DepEd, we are coordinating with the local police doon sa investigation. The PNP Is also conducting its own investigation para malaman kung ano ba talaga ang nangyari dito."
