Phillies dominate All-Star voting update; could new record be set?

No matter how you slice it, the last 24 hours have been an endless streak of wins for the Philadelphia Phillies and their fans.

On Sunday afternoon, they defeated the Arizona Diamondbacks in a National League Championship Series rematch and regained control of the best record in Major League Baseball. Then, the second round of MLB All-Star voting updates dropped on Monday.

Once again, the Phillies are dominating at the ballot box. Bryce Harper is the NL's top overall vote-getter and the only player in the senior circuit with over 2 million votes. Alec Bohm still leads at third base.

Meanwhile, Trea Turner, J.T. Realmuto, Brandon Marsh, and Nick Castellanos are in a position to advance to the next round of voting. Kyle Schwarber is also within striking distance of the second and final designated hitter spot, trailing the Atlanta Braves' Marcell Ozuna by roughly 60,000 votes.

With six players currently above the cutoff point, Philadelphia is tied with the Baltimore Orioles for the most prospective All-Star finalists in baseball. Phase 1 ends Thursday at noon EST, when voting resets and includes only the finalists at each position.

Because the voting only impacts position players, the Phillies can break new ground this season. The all-time MLB record for All-Stars on a single team is nine, last set by the 1959 New York Yankees.

With Zack Wheeler and Ranger Suárez as virtual locks to make the team and several more with strong chances, the Phillies stand a decent chance to tie or even break that long-standing record. Cristopher Sánchez, Aaron Nola, Jeff Hoffman, and Matt Strahm also figure to earn serious consideration on the pitching side.
