EPRA suspends licenses of 5 LPG manufacturers

The Energy and Petroleum Regulatory Authority (EPRA) has suspended licenses for several Liquified Petroleum Gas (LPG) manufacturers over their alleged involvement in LPG malpractices.
On Monday the organization published a list of 10 manufacturers whose licenses were either revoked, fined and warned, and suspended pending investigations.
Five firms had their licenses suspended, one firm's license was revoked and two others were warned and fined.
Another firm was decommissioned and another is under investigation.
In a statement, EPRA said the listing follows random surveillance and enforcement exercises undertaken by the Authority.
"The authority undertakes random surveillance and enforcement on LPG businesses in a bid to enhance compliance security safety and promote consumer protection," EPRA said.
Some of the offences committed included refilling LPG into cylinders of other brands without the brand owners' prior written consent, operating an unlicensed LPG storage and filling facility obstructing and denying Authority to undertake inspection at the facility and many more
Section 11 (e) of the Energy Act 2019 mandates EPRA to develop and enforce guidelines that ensure compliance with the Act and the licensing conditions stipulated in the Act.
Further, the Petroleum Act 2019 and the Petroleum (Liquefied Petroleum Gas) Regulations 2019 require persons to undertake the business of LPG in accordance with the terms and conditions of their valid licenses issued by the Authority.
Accordingly, the Authority carries out surveillance and enforcement on Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG) facilities to enhance environmental and consumer safety.
The surveillance was conducted between April to June 2024
