Hungary's PM Orban Meets Zelensky in a Surprise Visit, Ukraine To Cede Territory To Russia?| Watch
Ceasefire to end the war in Ukraine. Orwin's surprise visit leaves Zelensky baffled what the Hungarian leader advised to the Ukrainian president. Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orwin recently made a surprise visit to Kiev on 2nd of July 2024, meeting the Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky. This visit came just today after Hungary took over the European Union's rotating presidency, giving the country's significant influence over the EU priorities for the next six months. Orban, who has been known for his criticism of the Western support for Ukraine, urged Zelensky to consider a quick ceasefire to potentially accelerate the peace talk with Russia. He suggested a time limited ceasefire, emphasizing that it could speed up the negotiations to end the war that has been ongoing for over 2 years now. The visit marked Auburn's first trip to Kiev since Russia's invasion in February 2022. Unlike many European leaders, he has been vocal in his opposition to the financial and military aid for Ukraine. Orban had also previously criticized EU's packages and had criticized the decision to open the formal EU membership talks with Ukraine. The Hungarian leader has maintained warmer relation with the Russian President Vladimir Putin compared to other EU leaders. In October 2023, Orban also became the first EU leader to meet Putin since the war began during a regional summit in Beijing. During the joint press conference with Zelensky, Orban stated that he will report their talk to the EU prime ministers to help inform their future European decisions. Zelensky Forrest Part also emphasized the symbolic timing of the visit and stressed the importance of continuous European military support for Ukraine. The meeting comes against the backdrop of the ongoing war. Russian forces recently killed one person and wounded seven others in the partially occupied Khershwan region while claiming the capture of several more villages in eastern Ukraine. The relations between Auburn and Zelensky have also been tense since the wars is on set. Zelensky had previously called out Auburn for his lack of support, and the two leaders even had a brief, seemingly tense exchange at international events. Hungary's position is crucial for Western support to Ukraine due to the membership of both the EU and NATO. This give Hungary the power to influence, delay or block initiatives and funding for Kiev. The visit also touched on pre-existing tensions between the two countries, particularly regarding the Ukraine's language priority affecting the ethnic community of Hungarians in western Ukraine. Now, as Hungary takes on EU presidency, Orban's visit and his stance on the Ukraine war will likely have significant implication on the EU policy and support for Ukraine in the coming months.
