Euro 2024 fans agree with furious John Terry over BBC's 'shameful' Cristiano Ronaldo coverage
A host of fans have criticised the BBC for mocking Cristiano Ronaldo's penalty miss during Portugal's win over Slovenia.
The Portuguese eventually landed themselves a spot in the quarter-finals by seeing off their opponents in a penalty shootout after a goalless 120 minutes. It was Ronaldo who had the best chance to break the deadlock when he stepped up during extra-time.
However the Al-Nassr star saw his spot kick saved by Jan Oblak before he burst into tears moments later. Ronaldo's penalty was later reviewed by the BBC who titled it "Misstiano Penaldo" - a clear play on words of the player's name.
John Terry, who himself missed an iconic penalty in the final of the Champions League back in 2008, criticised the broadcaster for their coverage as he said: "BBC this is a disgrace".
It seems as if the Chelsea legend isn't the only person who thought the BBC's play on words was in poor taste. One account on social media said: "BBC disrespecting Cristiano Ronaldo. No player in the history of football has been disrespected like this." Another said: "Absolutely shameful from the BBC" whilst a third added: "A legend of the game should never be treated this way during his final Euros."
Ronaldo later stepped up to take the first penalty in the shootout, making amends as he hammered it into the bottom corner and beyond Oblak. Two penalties later and Portugal had their victory after Slovenia failed to convert any of their attempts to exit the tournament.
The 39-year-old said: "Even the strongest people have their [bad] days. I was at rock bottom when the team needed me the most. Sadness at the start is joy at the end. That's what football is. Moments, inexplicable moments. I feel sad and happy at the same time. But the important thing is to enjoy it. The team did an extraordinary job. We fought right to the end and I think we deserved it because we had more authority."
The BBC have been criticised for their coverage
It was goalkeeper Diogo Costa who was the nation's hero however. He and a number of team-mates rallied around Ronaldo as he became visibly emotional following his penalty miss and admits he produced the game of his life to send Portugal through.
He said: "We all know that Cristiano is the hardest worker. I understand how frustrated he is because he devotes all his time to this. It’s a pleasure and an honour to be on the same team as him. We're a family, I really think this. I focus on making the best of these chances and I wanted to help the team. This is the most important thing. This is probably the best game of my life."
