Here are the laws for shooting off fireworks in the City of Houston

HOUSTON — It's almost time to let freedom ring -- but that freedom won't apply to shooting off fireworks within Houston city limits.

With the 4th of July coming up, it's important to know the laws surrounding fireworks usage in the City.

The use of fireworks is not only illegal in the City of Houston and parts of Harris County, but they can be dangerous.

If you're caught using fireworks illegally, there will be no warning issued, instead, you will be immediately fined between $500 to $2,000 per firework -- even if your kids are the ones popping them.

It is legal to drive in the City with fireworks in your vehicle. However, there are some restrictions.

Even though it is legal to buy, possess and use consumer fireworks in the unincorporated areas of Harris County, there are some places where you can't use them.

According to the Houston Fire Department, these unauthorized places include locations near churches, hospitals an asylum, a licensed child care center, or a public or private primary or secondary school or institution of higher education unless the person receives authorization in writing from that organization.

Fire officials warn that although fireworks and celebrations go together, they can cause serious burns and eye injuries when used improperly.

According to the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA), an estimated 19,500 fires started by fireworks were reported to local U.S. fire departments each year.

The NFPA reports that more than one-third of the victims are under the age of 15 and an estimated 44 percent of injuries are due to burns.

If you'd like to report the illegal use of fireworks, you can call the non-emergency line at 713-884-3131. If it is an emergency, call 911.
