BREAKING: Sharks' Nikolai Knyzhov Clears Waivers, Contract Mutually Terminated
San Jose Sharks defenseman Nikolai Knyzhov was placed on waivers yesterday for what was supposed to be a buyout, but the team and player agreed to terminate the contract after he cleared.
Injuries have derailed Knyzhov's career. After a bright start as Erik Karlsson's partner during the 2021 shortened season, Knyzhov has played just 22 games in the NHL. He spent most of the 23-24 season in the AHL with the San Jose Barracuda.
The defenseman has three goals and nine assists in 81 career NHL games. In 40 games with the Cuda this season, he had three goals and 11 assists.
The Sharks are re-working the defense, and once Knyzhov clears waivers, he will become an unrestricted free agent.
While the cap hit wouldn't have been high if he was bought out, the Sharks save a little more space with the contract termination.
