WestJet begins cancelling flights as it faces possible strike action
Well, long weekend travel plans are now up in the air for some travelers. WestJet has started to cancel flights ahead of the busy Canada Day long weekend as the airline faces possible strike action by its mechanics. Our Kendall Sligoski is at Y e.g. with more. Last week we heard from disappointed and frustrated travelers when they had their flights abruptly canceled. This week, the same situation as the threat of a strike once again looms, and this time. Heading into the long weekend, one of the busiest travel seasons of the year. Now the mechanics union once again threatening to walk off the job. The union members did rescind that strike notice last week, once again serving it again. This time they could walk off the job. Late Friday afternoon, WestJet cancelled dozens of flights across the country for Thursday and Friday, and the airline is warning travelers to be prepared for future disruptions. And the company saying that if there is a strike this long weekend, it could impact the travel plans of 250,000 passengers. In case the strike is actually going to happen, we will keep a base network flying, but it will be substantially reduced compared to what we had originally planned. So you should expect that if the strike actually happens, there will be 100 thousands of flights being of of guests flight travel plans being disrupted. So we don't want this to happen like anyone else does. We want to travel. We have like hell vacations plans like it's, it's hard to say like they're going to paint us as the bad guy, which I believe we're not. We do a very good job of what we do and it's can be a little bit distracting and scary, right? So the mechanics union represents 600 plus workers again serving that strike notice and they could walk off the job if they do not come to an agreement at 5:30 late Friday afternoon. Back to you.
