[Commentary] Maybe it’s time to start updating some of the Filipino traditions

The Philippines has been upholding traditions that stem its origins from our ancestors and are being carried up until the present.

While there are attempts to continue this legacy built by our forefathers, some of these traditions have become outdated due to the innovations that are slowly being discovered from time to time.

Although these changes may cause a shock to many, there are great opportunities for updating these traditions. As the world progresses swiftly, injecting modernized changes in old-fashioned traditions can contribute to reviving and preserving it even more.

For example, the celebration of festivals here in the country like the “Wattah Wattah Festival” in San Juan City. This festival honors the feast of St. John the Baptist, their patron saint.

While it is meant to be part of a fun festivity, people have been sharing their sentiments online about celebrating this festival as this has caused trouble to many.

A video was posted via X (formerly Twitter) that shows what the festival goers are doing which got out of hand as it seems like those who are passing by them did not ask for this.

The residents would spray water on people that are passing by them as well as vehicles which look like they don’t care that they are causing an inconvenience.

Their actions are a prime example of which they practice tradition without understanding what it really is for. They are just aware of the shallow part which is to spray people with water.

This can cause unnecessary stress to the person as well as causing trouble to the community.

These traditions that do not contribute anything for the betterment of our society shall be deeply contemplated about. Which is why it is time to think about updating the traditions we uphold in our country.

Bring back the traditions that are slowly fading and apply a modern flare to it so everything meets in the middle.

Traditions should not be the reason to despise certain things. These should enrich your own culture and identity.
