Fire south of Brisbane forces evacuation of dozens of homes

Dozens of homes have been evacuated due to a raging fire at a storage facility south of Brisbane.

Witnesses saw smoke billowing into the sky shortly after the blaze broke out on Kingston Road about 10pm yesterday.

Police described the fire as "extensive" and were expecting firefighters to continue to battle it throughout the day.

Homes on Kingston Road, Juers Road, Skyline Drive, Jacaranda Avenue and Hibiscus Street were evacuated throughout the night and traffic diversions were put in place as police implemented an exclusion zone.

Two young people were getting some food when they saw firefighters rushing to the scene.

"When we came over the bridge I thought that maybe the servo was on fire but the lights were still on there and I was like, well obviously that's not it," one of them said.

"And then we drove around the corner and it was the warehouse.

"It was a whole heap of big flames coming out of it. It was kind of scary."

The other said it looked like a "big fireball", with the building engulfed in flames.

An evacuation centre was set up at the nearby Kingston Butter Factory.

"Residents should close windows and doors and keep respiratory medications close by if required," police said.
