PITTSBURGH – The NHL is just days away from the opening of free agency and the Pittsburgh Penguins need to start thinking about making a splash. The Penguins failed to reach the playoffs for the second straight season and are in desperate need of fresh blood to boost multiple areas of the team.
One area in particular is their depth forward group. The Penguins could use a huge boost from a big name and they appear to be among the front runners on a key free agent.
According to ontariobets.com, the Penguins are one of the top teams most likely to land free agent Max Domi. With an 8.7% chance, the Penguins have been given +1050 odds to sign the scrappy forward.
Domi has bounced around the league a bit, most recently spending the 2023-24 season with the Toronto Maple Leafs. In 80 games played with the Maple Leafs, Domi picked up nine goals and 38 assists for 47 total points. Nine goals don’t stand out, but 38 helpers were some of the most on the Leafs last season.
The Penguins could plot Domi anywhere in the lineup and he should find a level off success. In the bottom six as a center he immediately brings a boost of offense and adds points to a usually low-production group. Domi also has a defensive side to his game, so he wouldn’t be all offense.
If Domi was to play in the top six as a winger, even that could work well. He could help feed pucks to Sidney Crosby or Evgeni Malkin as they look to elevate their game in the final years of their careers.
The Penguins need to make waves in free agency, and focusing on Domi could help in more ways than one.
