BBC radio legend quits after 27 years as he tells listeners 'you've been my family'

One of the BBC's longest-serving presenters said an emotional farewell to his listeners after nearly three decades of entertainment - saying the job has been a "privilege".

The star, 76, has decided to step down from his radio role and will be replaced by Strictly Come Dancing star Katie Derham and Petroc Trelawny, who currently fronts the weekday breakfast show.

However, the switch will not be taking place until next year.

Sean Rafferty has been the host of the BBC's In Tune, a mixture of live music and interviews from the world's finest classical musicians, on Radio 3 more than 25 years.

He said in a statement: "I shall miss the truly remarkable and life-enhancing musicians, many coming to the studio ever since they began their careers - a joy. And to be able to share it all with the listeners at home - a privilege. They’ve been like family."

Sam Jackson, controller of BBC Radio 3 and BBC Proms, said: “After over 50 years of broadcasting, nearly three decades of which have been on BBC Radio 3, Sean Rafferty’s impact has been immeasurable – and we all wish him the very best for the future.

"I’m delighted that, after over a decade of early starts, Petroc will be joining Katie to bring his wit, warmth and sparkling rapport to In Tune.”

The Belfast-born broadcaster has been named Radio Presenter of the Year and received the MBE in 2017 for Services to Broadcasting.

Sean started out working on Northern Ireland TV programmes including Inside Ulster before moving to London in the mid-90s to present the Radio 3 drivetime show In Tune.
