The Martin Lewis fan managed to claim back £600 from their energy supplier

One Brit shared how one Martin Lewis energy bill tip helped them boost their finances by £600.

In the recent Money Saving Expert (MSE) newsletter, Martin's team shared the success story of someone called Eve. The Martin Lewis fan wrote to the team to tell them that they had followed the MSE founder's advice on claiming back energy credit.

If you pay your energy bills by direct debit, your supplier will take your annual costs, based on your average use and divide it by 12 to work out your monthly payments. Martin Lewis has explained before that this helps smooth out your energy bills so you are not facing sky-high bills in the winter months.

This week's MSE newsletter said that at the start of the summer, Brits should have the lowest amount of energy credit in their accounts. So if you have more than one month's worth of bill payments in there then it's "too much" and you should ask for some money back.

For example, if your direct debit is £150 a month, and you have £300 credit sat in your energy account, then you should ask for £150 of it back. If you have less, then you should keep the credit in your energy account and you may also want to increase your monthly payments to cover yourself according to Martin.

Eve told the MSE team that she got in contact with her supplier Utility Warehouse as she was £600 in credit. Eve asked to be refunded and saw the money in her bank account within four days. She said: "I got in touch with my supplier Utility Warehouse, as I was £600 in credit. Asked for it to be refunded - no issues at all. Money was in my bank account within four days."
