Pretty UK village frozen in time where almost everything is owned just by one man

This idyllic, old fashioned village in the heart of the English countryside is known for its beautiful views and rich history - and is almost completely owned by one single family.

Firle is a picturesque village located in East Sussex, nestled at the foot of the South Downs. This charming small town is steeped in history with roots tracing back to the Domesday Book of 1086, where it was recorded as ‘Ferla’. The village's idyllic setting and historical significance make it a quintessential example of rural England, attracting visitors looking to experience its serene landscapes and cultural heritage.

Perhaps one of the most unusual features of Firle is that out of the 110 properties in the village, 90 are owned by Firle Estate - which all belongs to one single family. William Gage acquired the land way back in 1476 and his descendants are still the owners of a majority proportion of the town. Firle Place, an elegant manor house and prominent landmark in the town, has been the home of the Gage family more than 500 years.

The village has been used as the setting for blockbuster films and a hit Netflix series

Firle Place is an exquisite example of Tudor and Stuart architecture with its impressive collection of antiques and art from the likes of Van Dyck, Reynolds, and Gainsborough. It has been used as a filming location for blockbusters like Emma and the hit Netflix series Queen Charlotte. The estate's beautifully maintained gardens and parklands are open to the public and offering visitors a glimpse into the grandeur of English aristocratic life. It also has a tea room and terrace and hosts events throughout the year.

Firle also boasts a vibrant community spirit, centred around its local amenities and events. The village pub, The Ram Inn, is a focal point of social life, providing a warm and welcoming atmosphere for both locals and visitors. Additionally, Firle hosts an annual bonfire night, a tradition that dates back to the 16th century and draws large crowds with its elaborate displays and communal festivities.

The surrounding countryside is a haven for outdoor enthusiasts, with numerous walking and cycling routes that offer stunning views of the South Downs National Park. The Firle Beacon, one of the highest points in the South Downs, provides panoramic views particularly popular with hikers. This natural beauty, combined with the village's historic charm, makes Firle a perfect destination for those looking to escape the hustle and bustle of modern life.

In addition to its natural and architectural attractions, Firle has a rich cultural heritage. The village has been associated with several notable figures including the Bloomsbury Group, a collective of influential writers, artists, and intellectuals. Charleston Farmhouse, located nearby, was the home of artists Vanessa Bell and Duncan Grant, and remains a museum and cultural center celebrating their legacy and the Bloomsbury Group's contributions to art and literature.
