Downton Abbey third film release date confirmed as cast already filming
Downton Abbey's third movie finally has a release date and fans don't have too long to wait.
The highly-anticipated film in the hit franchise will be coming to cinemas soon and will have a simultaneous global release. It is currently in production and is penned by Downton creator Julian Fellowes. The movie series is a spin-off to the popular ITV show that ran from 2010 until 2015.
Downton Abbey became a worldwide sensation and made huge stars of the likes of Michelle Dockery, Joanne Froggatt and Laura Carmichael. The first movie landed in 2019 and sequel Downton Abbey: A New Era followed in 2022. Now, the beloved characters are set to return for a new installment on September 12, 2025.
Earlier this year, actor Jim Carter revealed the cast of Downton Abbey were set to begin filming in May. He said it will definitely bring the curtain down on the period drama forever. Rumours of a third film have circulated for a while, with the storyline expected to pick up where the last sequel left off, in the late-1920s.
DOWNTON ABBEY: A New Era,
Jim, who plays the beloved butler Carson, said in April: "We start filming in five weeks time. What can I tell you about the new Downton film? Very little really. I don’t want to give any spoilers but I think we can assuredly say it will be the last Downton film. They are still tinkering with the script. All the favourite characters will be there with some new ones for a bit of fun. I can say, and I don’t think I am giving anything away, but we will be filming some of it in Harrogate, my home town."
Hugh Bonneville, who plays Earl Robert Crawley, has also teased the upcoming movie will be the "best yet". Speaking to Yahoo UK, he said: "For my character, I think the usual [can be expected], which is that he's a sort of dinosaur trying to be led into the future reluctantly, and then eventually he stumbles forward a bit.
"So, as always, there's that rhythm of things changing with glacial slowness, and Robert finally accepting that things [are changing] -- it's time to move the story on, so to speak. It's got the usual tropes, if you like, of thrills and spills in a very Downtown way - which means spilling a tea cup, pretty much!"
The last time fans saw the famous Crawley family was in the movie Downton Abbey: A New Era sequel. It saw them take a surprise trip to the French Riviera after learning that family matriarch Dowager Countess Violet had inherited a villa from a former lover. Stars of the much loved cast including Hugh Bonneville, Penelope Wilton, Laura Carmichael, Michelle Dockery and Joanne Froggatt appeared on the big screen. A New Era also saw a slew of new faces join the star-studded cast, including Dominic West and Hugh Dancy.
