Downton Abbey 3 release date confirmed as star-studded cast reunite for new movie

The release date for Downton Abbey 3 has been set for September 12th, 2025, as announced by Universal Pictures UK on their Instagram account.

The post excitedly declared: "A new motion picture event. The third film in the beloved #DowntonAbbey franchise will be released only in cinemas September 12, 2025."

Fans can look forward to seeing familiar faces like Hugh Bonneville, who plays family patriarch Robert Crawley, as well as Dominic West, and Elizabeth McGovern, among others, returning to the silver screen.

Joanne Froggatt, who recently shared news of her pregnancy, will join the cast alongside Allen Leech and Penelope Wilton.

Adding to the stellar lineup, Paul Giamatti is confirmed to return as Cora's brother Harold Levinson, with Joely Richardson and House of the Dragon stars Simon Russell Beale and Arty Froushan expected to make appearances.

While plot details are still hush-hush, the film is penned by Julian Fellowes and produced by Gareth Neame, Fellowes, and Liz Trubridge.

This exciting update follows last month's teaser featuring a clip of the cast at a read-through, confirming the production of a third instalment in the Downton series.

Michelle Dockery expressed in the clip: "It feels amazing, a tad emotional. It's wonderful to all be back together again. We come back together and it's like no time has passed at all.

"We're so happy to announce that we're in production for the third 'Downton Abbey' movie. We can't wait to see you."

The ITV series tackled some of the biggest issues of the day, including World War One and Two, the 1923 British election and the Spanish Influenza.

The initial duo of movies, which hit the screens in 2019 and 2022, raked in a whopping $287.3 million globally.
