Springbok injury update: Star player could be recalled soon!

When the Springboks unveiled their latest 39-man squad, it demonstrated the depth in South African rugby, but there are still a host of star players who are not available due to injury.

In total, the Springboks listed eight players who were ruled out of contention for selection due to injury, namely Steven Kitshoff (prop), Jean Kleyn, Lood de Jager (both locks), Cameron Hanekom (flanker), Jaden Hendrikse (scrumhalf), Henco van Wyk (centre), Canan Moodie and Damian Willemse (both utility backs).

However, there has been some good news in the latest injury updated shared by the Springboks.

For one, talented wing Canan Moodie, who had surgery to repair a fractured finger earlier this month, could also make a welcome return to the national team in the next few weeks.

Moodie’s return date was initially unclear, but it now seems highly likely that he will come back into selection mix for the Rugby Championship, which kicks off with a clash against Australia on 10 August.

Erasmus also provided another update on other injuries: “Cheslin (Kolbe) has been cleared to play, and we’ll manage Edwill (van der Merwe), Faf (de Klerk), and (Makazole) Mapimpi this week, although they should be available for selection for the first Ireland Test,” said Erasmus.

“Looking forward to the Rugby Championship, the young players who put up their hands against Wales and during the Incoming Series will certainly be looked at for selection,” he added.

Casting an eye on the two Tests against Ireland, Erasmus refused to be drawn into the reported banter from the Irish saying: “If there’s one team that has the upper hand, it’s them. We haven’t beaten them since 2016.”
