Vitamin C for sensitive skin — now possible

There are many misconceptions about sensitive skin, including the belief that it cannot tolerate active ingredients.

People with sensitive skin are often associated with compromised skin, which means they may experience stinging or burning sensations when using actives such as retinoids, AHAs (alpha hydroxy acids), BHAs (beta hydroxy acids), and vitamin C (ascorbic acid), just to name a few. Some users with sensitive skin observed irritation, redness and general discomfort in using these ingredients.

But these ingredients have proven benefits that even people with sensitive skin can reap.

To address sensitive skin concerns, users can look for products that incorporate active ingredients in gentle formulations.

For instance, vitamin C is available in derivatives such as Sodium Ascorbyl Phosphate and Magnesium Ascorbyl Phosphate. These water-soluble and stable forms of vitamin C are reported to be less irritating.

Dr. Corie Rodas, a board-certified dermatologist, said vitamin C is a popular active ingredient because it can improve collagen production, help brighten skin (addressing hyperpigmentation and brown spots, which are common to Filipinos) and aid in the removal of free radicals that can cause aging.

As the beauty industry evolves and technology brings product innovations, a new form of vitamin C has emerged that may be more beneficial for sensitive skin.

Enter 3-O-ethyl ascorbic acid.

A new derivative of vitamin C, 3-O-ethyl ascorbic acid is both water and oil soluble, making it stable. Vitamin C is notoriously unstable, which can affect its efficacy. Therefore, stability is crucial.

One of the brands harnessing this innovation is Quickfx which launched its new line, Sen-C Bright, specifically for sensitive skin.

At the heart of the Sen-C Bright line is the unique blend of Pure Vitamin C and Vitamin Tree Water. With a lower acidic concentration (PH6) and the stability of 3-o-Ethyl Ascorbic Acid, the line promises to deliver effective results without the irritation.

The Sen-C Bright range comes features three hero products.

First is the overnight serum, a potent treatment formulated to work its magic while users sleep. It promises to reveal a brighter and even complexion come morning.

Second is the micellar water. Gentle yet effective, this sensitive-skin friendly product offers a refreshing cleanse without the oily, sticky feel often associated with traditional makeup removers. Perfect for removing excess dirt and grime, it is also packed with Hyaluronic Acid to lock in moisture.

Finally, there's the day serum cream. It combines the brightening power of Vitamin C, Vitamin E for optimal absorption into the skin as well as protection from free radicals, and SPF 30 PA++++.

"Everyone can enjoy vitamin C but if you have a sensitive skin, the best way for you is to do patch testing first. Then try to use less than 10 percent concentration first. If your skin can already tolerate it, that's only the time for you to consider going higher," the dermatologist finally reminded.

Sen-C Bright is now available at Watsons online and Watsons stores nationwide.
