A pregnant woman has been left outraged after a council fined her for briefly leaving her car in a no stopping zone while she was having painful contractions.

Abby Kernahan, 37, was struck with painful Braxton-Hicks contractions when she was 39 weeks pregnant in Randwick, in Sydney’s east, on December 20.

Even though the visual merchandiser was near her home, the painful contractions rendered her unable to drive.

‘I was definitely unable to drive – it wouldn’t have been smart or safe to drive,’ she told Daily Mail Australia.

‘I pulled over, I was not on a main road, my hazard lights were on and I knew people could get around me.

The mother received a $302 fine in the mail five weeks later but when she contacted Revenue NSW with details about why she was parked in the no stopping zone (pictured), they told her it wasn’t a ‘medical emergency’

‘It was the cafe in our apartment complex, I thought I might have to leave my keys there and go to hospital.’

Ms Kernahan, who had experienced contractions earlier that day, knew that if two to three are experienced in ten minutes, she would need to act.

‘I got out of my car and the contraction passed,’ she said.

‘I told myself I’ll wait here for five to ten minutes and if they keep coming I’ll start worrying.’

Luckily, they subdued and the mum was able to drive away after less than ten minutes.

According to Health Direct, Braxton-Hicks contractions are also known as ‘false labour’ due to their intensity but ‘don’t lead to labour and birth’.

With her baby girl, Isla, born on December 28 the mum was surprised to receive a $302 fine five weeks after she was forced to stop her car.

‘I thought, no, this can’t be that day. I was more really surprised than anything else,’ she said.

Ms Kernahan contested the fine explaining her situation, but Revenue NSW refused to budge.

Ms Kernahan had been parked for less than ten minutes (pictured) and she wasn’t obstructing any other traffic. The mother said the ranger should have come and checked to see if it was a medical emergency – they could have rendered assistance

Her $302 fine was reviewed and said her painful pregnancy symptoms didn’t qualify as a medical emergency. The Sydney mum wants pregnancy’s to be taken into account as ‘wild’ things can happen to women

‘I sent all the information and they sent back a letter and photos of my car and said contractions aren’t a medical emergency,’ she said.

‘That’s when I was really angry. Do I need to be having the baby? Is that where we’re at?’

The mother said it feels like it was a clear example of revenue raising as the ranger didn’t come over to see what the situation was.

‘Despite having the hazard lights on, they didn’t come over and check if it was a real medical emergency,’ she said.

‘No-one came over and said “Hey, what’s going on?”.’

Ms Kernahan said it was raining heavily that day and believes the ranger didn’t even get out of their car.

‘I would put money on it,’ she said.

‘Because they don’t issue paper fines anymore, they can just take photos from their car. The photos they sent me were all taken from the same angle.’

The mother is understood to have since received a phone call from Revenue NSW informing her the fine had been revoked.

Daily Mail Australia contacted Revenue NSW for comment.
