Wrexham star makes two transfer predictions after promotion to League One

Wrexham goalkeeper Mark Howard believes the Red Dragons have the power to attract players from higher in the English football pyramid following their promotion to League One.

The Welsh side secured back-to-back promotions last Saturday, after defeating Forest Green 6-0 at the Racecourse Ground to ensure they will be playing in the third tier of English football next campaign. It comes after they secured a return to the Football League 12 months earlier, after winning the National League title.

The story of Wrexham has been no secret in recent years, after Hollywood stars Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney took over the club in November 2020 in a bid to return them to former glory. Under the ownership of Reynolds and McElhenney, Wrexham have been able to lure in some of the Football League’s top stars in recent campaigns.

Shot-stopper Howard has made two predictions moving into another busy summer – that the backing of the club’s owners will continue and that the club will continue to be an attracted draw for players at a higher level.

“There will be a lot of players from higher divisions looking at Wrexham and thinking how appealing it is,” he told Online Betting Guide.

“The way [the owners] look after us is fantastic. The club is building and they want success. We can tell with the way the club is progressing and building that we have to do the best we can to deliver. Other players from other teams will be looking at us and thinking we are a good club to play for one day.”

There is no doubt the Red Dragons will once again have to make their move in the upcoming transfer market if they are to continue their progression up the Football League. And Howard believes the investment into the playing squad from the ownership will carry on heading into the summer and beyond.

Wrexham defeated Forest Green last weekend

“Momentum is huge in football,” Howard added. “Our target will be to continue to build. We won’t be making big predictions as that is not us. League One is a lot tougher and a bigger ask as there are a lot of big clubs with history. The levels get harder but we will try and continue to push on.

“We have been accustomed to winning. You never know what will happen. The owners have shown they will give the backing so it’s exciting times and who knows where it will take us.” Unsurprisingly co-owner Reynolds enjoyed the celebrations of last weekend’s promotion, taking to social media to let out his emotions on the back of victory.

“A few years ago,” he tweeted. “If you told me I would be crying tears of joy over a football match taking place in North Wales, you would be Rob McElhenney. Congrats to Wrexham and to my co-chairman in crime. Double up the town! This is the ride of our lives.”
