Former Yankees pitcher dies at 73

Former major league pitcher and three-time World Series champion Don Gullett died Wednesday, according to ESPN. He was 73.

The Cincinnati Enquirer reported that Gullett had recent health issues.

In a nine-year MLB career with the Cincinnati Reds and New York Yankees, he was 109-50 with a 3.11 ERA and 11 saves in 266 games.

“Don dedicated 24 years to this franchise as a player, coach and minor league instructor,” Reds CEO Bob Castellini said on X. “An anchor on the pitching staff of one of the greatest baseball teams in history, his contributions to our rich tradition, our city and his community will never be forgotten.”

Gullett signed with the Yankees as a free agent after the 1976 season and spent two years in New York.

“The Yankees mourn the passing of Don Gullett and extend our deepest condolences to Don’s family, friends and loved ones,” the Yankees wrote on X.

“Don Gullett, the best athlete and competitor I ever saw or played with!,” former Reds catcher Johnny Bench wrote on X. “He will be missed.”
