Crews working to clear the N28 after Thursday’s crash
A woman is in serious condition in hospital after a truck collided with several other vehicles in Co Cork on Thursday afternoon.
The collision occurred on the N28 by Carr’s Hill which resulted in the road being entirely closed off to the public from 2pm, reports Cork Beo.
A car is understood to have crossed the centre line of the road during the incident, colliding with an oncoming truck and causing it to hit multiple vehicles before losing control and ultimately jack-knifing.
Gardaí were assisted at the scene by the National Ambulance Service and fire service members from the Anglesea Street station within 30 minutes of the incident.
Emergency personnel rushed the injured woman to Cork University Hospital where she remains in a serious condition.
One woman’s vehicle was partially crushed as the jack-knifed trailer dislodged and came down on her car. She was trapped inside for over an hour.
Cork City Fire Brigade Officer, Victor Shine described the recovery operation as one of the most challenging he has seen in a long time.
A spokesperson for the Cork City Fire Brigade said: “There were four vehicles involved in the collision, two cars, a van and an articulated lorry. A number of casualties have been taken to hospital for treatment.”
Heavy lifting equipment is now on-site and a major clean-up operation is under way with the aim of reopening the road as soon as possible.
Gardaí across the south of Cork city blocked off a number of roundabouts to allow ambulances to pass through with Garda escorts.
Traffic has been heavy as a result of the road closure with substantial delays on major commuter routes.
A Garda investigation is in the early stages to establish the cause of the incident, and technical teams are examining all circumstances surrounding today’s collision.
A spokesperson for An Garda Siochana told The Irish Mirorr: “Garda Forensic Collision investigators have completed a technical examination of the scene.
“Gardaí in Togher are appealing to anyone who may have witnessed this incident to contact them.
“Any road users who were travelling on the N28 this afternoon between 12.45pm and 1.45pm and who may have camera footage (including dash cam) is asked to make this available to investigating Gardaí.
“Anyone with information in relation to the incident is asked to contact Togher Garda Station on 021 494 7120, the Garda Confidential Line on 1800 666 111, or any Garda station.”
