Sergio Garcia hit back at Rory McIlroy’s recent criticisms of the LIV Golf league. McIlroy has been a vocal critic of the Saudi-backed league since its formation in June 2022.
Garcia, a former Ryder Cup teammate of McIlroy, disagreed with the four-time major winner’s views. He told The Standard: “I don’t think we want to be important for one month. We all deserve more than that.”
The Spaniard also believes that the signing of his fellow countryman Jon Rahm last month shows that LIV Golf is here to stay. Garcia said: “It shows we’re here to stay for a long time.
“People were thinking this is going to be two or three years and then gone. You’re seeing guys sign through to the late 2020s and maybe even the 2030s.”

As we move closer to 2024, it seems that the Northern Irish golfer McIlroy is starting to welcome the competitor tour. Recently, he proposed that the new golf league should operate for two months of the year, similar to cricket’s Indian Premier League.
On the Stick to Football podcast, he said: “What I would love LIV to turn into is almost like the Indian Premier League of golf. If they were to do something like that, I think that sounds like fun you’re at least working within the ecosystem.”
Last month, Rahm joined LIV Golf, reportedly signing up for $500million deal. He’s anticipated to head his own LIV team, but no details about his team have been disclosed yet, even though the first event of the year is only weeks away.
