Denver Broncos’ endured a frustrating night during their blowout loss to the Detroit Lions on Saturday night.
No one seemed to be more frustrated than Broncos’ head coach Sean Payton. Payton was seen screaming at quarterback Russell Wilson during the fourth quarter of the Broncos’ 42-17 loss at Detroit.
Payton said after the game he was upset about an offside penalty in the third quarter that nullified a touchdown that would have cut Denver’s deficit to 14 points.
Payton refused to reveal what he said to Wilson. Payton grew salty when pressed by reporters about the exchange.
“Listen, what I talk to Russell about is none of your business,” Payton tersely said to a reporter.
Payton’s reference to the penalty was part of a bizarre series for the Broncos late in the third quarter. They seemed to score a touchdown on three consecutive plays, but the first two were ruled short of the goal line by the officials and the third one was nullified by a questionable offside call at the snap on right guard Quinn Meinerz.
Payton indicated he didn’t challenge the spot on either of the two plays before the penalty because those plays are difficult to overturn from the initial ruling. Still, Payton was criticized on social media for not even challenging either call.
Wilson was asked after the game if he thinks Payton still has trust and faith in him as the team’s starting quarterback after receiving a fierce berating in public.
“Yeah, I mean, of course,” Wilson told reporters. “I think the biggest thing is, we’re trying to score a touchdown there. I think we all want to score there. You want a coach that’s passionate, we want players that are, too.”
The Broncos entered the game having won six of their previous seven games and found themselves just one game behind first-place Kansas City going into Saturday’s game. But the loss to the Lions placed the Broncos (7-7) in a precarious position as they chase a wild card playoff spot with three games remaining in the regular season.
