The Philadelphia Flyers will sign defenseman Erik Johnson to a one-year contract extension, according to multiple reports.
Earlier in the offseason, Flyers GM Danny Briere did not rule out keeping Johnson, who was acquired from the Buffalo Sabres in March, highlighting the value of his veteran presence on a back line that is getting increasingly younger.
Briere said that the Flyers would "probably [seek out] a veteran presence, kind of like Marc Staal was" during free agency, and when asked if keeping Johnson on was a possibility in that case, he went on to say, "That would be Erik Johnson. Exactly."
Johnson's contract will reportedly have an AAV of $1 million.
The defenseman had two goals and one assist in 67 games with the Flyers this season, and his wealth of NHL experience was a coveted contribution to the organization. A first overall pick from 2006, Johnson quickly became a well-liked presence in the locker room and helped the Flyers' defense through their difficult period of chaos due to trades and injuries in early 2024.
