The UCLA Bruins are embarking on a new chapter in 2024, venturing into the competitive landscape of the Big 10 conference under the guidance of their new head coach, DeShaun Foster.

Foster steps into the role formerly held by Chip Kelly, who departed Westwood for Ohio State amidst rumors of an NFL aspiration. Kelly’s tenure at UCLA, spanning six years, can best be described as underwhelming, if not outright disappointing.

After an illustrious stint leading Oregon to a remarkable 46-7 record from 2009 to 2012, hopes were high that Kelly would replicate his success with the Bruins. However, those hopes failed to materialize as UCLA managed a modest 35-34 record under his leadership, with a conference record of 26-26 and only one bowl win to show for it – the recent LA Bowl victory this past season.

It was a stark departure from Kelly’s previous college coaching achievements, and the lackluster results were no coincidence.

Kelly’s heart wasn’t in it at UCLA. His disdain for the recruiting process and his reluctance to adapt to the changing landscape of college football – marked by developments like Name, Image, and Likeness (NIL) opportunities and the transfer portal – hindered the Bruins’ potential for success.

Despite the allure of Los Angeles and the unique opportunities it presents to players, Kelly failed to capitalize on these advantages, resulting in a program that remained mired in mediocrity throughout his tenure.

Kelly’s preference for play-calling and coordinator duties over building a top-tier program became increasingly evident.

His departure from UCLA ultimately served the best interests of both parties involved. Kelly got the change of scenery he desired. At the same time, UCLA seized the opportunity to usher in a new era under Foster’s leadership, one that promises a fresh perspective and renewed energy.

For UCLA and Kelly alike, the separation was a long time coming. As the Bruins turn the page on the Kelly era and embrace the dawn of a new era, there’s a palpable sense of optimism and anticipation for what lies ahead. With Foster at the helm, UCLA aims to chart a course toward sustained success and become a football powerhouse.
