Covid cases are on the rise once again in the US
The United States is in the grip of a winter Covid wave, that the CDC believe is the second-largest to hit the country since the beginning of the pandemic.
As Covid cases rise across the US, largely thanks to a new strain that includes a number of new symptoms, the country is struggling to get a handle on it.
There are other factors that could have played a part in this rise – including bad weather at Christmas, people spending lots of time together in doors, and perhaps most importantly, people not taking it as serious as they did at one point.
A viral social media post based on CDC data, has dubbed this surge as the second-biggest Covid wave in U.S. history – only after the omicron surge from late 2021 to early 2022, which infected more people than even the early days of the pandemic.
However, the CDC pointed out that Covid-related deaths and hospitalizations do still remain lower than they did even at this point last year.
Lucky Tran, Ph.D., a science communicator at Columbia University Irving Medical Center, put together the CDC data into a graph, which makes some bold and negative predictions about the immediate future.
His post suggests that up to 1 in 3 people in the US could catch Covid during the peak months of this wave. He said as many as 2 million people could get infected in a single day.
This comes not long after the World Health Organization made an announcement to remind the public that Covid-19 is still an ongoing pandemic.
