St Brigid’s have confirmed that former Galway hurling manager Anthony Cunningham will take over as their manager for 2024.
Just five days after their agonising All-Ireland club football final defeat to Glen, St Brigid’s have welcomed Cunningham back to the fold for a second term.
It follows the departure of Jerome Stack as manager in the days after the defeat.
Cunningham was manager of St Brigid’s when they won their first Connacht title in 2006.
He went on to win a Leinster title with Garrycastle in 2011 and they came close to beating Crossmaglen Rangers in an All-Ireland final replay the following March when they drew, only to lose the replay.
Cunningham spent four years as Galway hurling manager, winning the 2012 Leinster final and reaching two All-Ireland finals which were lost to Kilkenny, 2012 after a replay.
Since then he has had a number of club and county positions, spending a year as Dublin hurling coach when Pat Gilroy was manager in 2018.
Cunningham lives in the St Brigid’s catchment area, his son John is part of the St Brigid’s panel and came on in Sunday’s final, and he will hope to build on the progress of the last six months that saw them win another Roscommon and Connacht title with a new look team that has some of the most exciting young players in the club game.
He will be assisted by Eoin Mooney, Niall Kelly and James Martin.
