Two types of social welfare recipients may be entitled to payment worth up to just under €250

Two types of social welfare recipients in Ireland may be entitled to a payment worth up to €237.

The Partial Capacity Benefit is a scheme for people who can’t work as much because of health problems. It lets them go back to work or start their own business and still get money from the Department of Social Protection.

If you’ve been getting Illness Benefit for at least six months, or Invalidity Pension and want to start working again, you could get Partial Capacity Benefit if your medical condition affects your ability to work.

You’ll get Partial Capacity Benefit if your ability to work is judged as moderate, severe, or profound. But, if it’s judged as mild, you won’t get it, reports RSVP Live.

How do you get Partial Capacity Benefit?

To get it, you need to be getting either:

  • Illness Benefit (for at least 6 months), or
  • Invalidity Pension

Before you start any job, you must get written permission from the Department of Social Protection and your doctor.

There’s no limit on how many hours you can work or how much you can earn, and you can also start your own business while getting Partial Capacity Benefit.

But, there are some rules. For example, you can’t get Partial Capacity Benefit and Working Family Payment at the same time. But, you can get Partial Capacity Benefit and a half-rate Carer’s Allowance together.

If you were getting Invalidity Pension, your Partial Capacity Benefit will continue for up to three years or 156 weeks, or until you turn 66. After the three years, you can apply again and they will check if you still qualify.

If you were receiving Illness Benefit, your Partial Capacity Benefit payment will keep going until your right to Illness Benefit ends.

How much do you get for Partial Capacity Benefit?

The amount of Partial Capacity Benefit varies. It includes a personal rate for you and may also include increases for your qualified adult and children.

The personal payment rate depends on how much your ability to work is limited, whether you were receiving Illness Benefit or Invalidity Pension and your current payment rate.

The increases for qualified children and adults are paid at the same rate. The conditions for these payments are the same as those that applied to your Illness Benefit or Invalidity Pension claim.
