Watch: Types of pain relief and what to do at night

.

It’s challenging enough dealing with pain, such as headaches, toothaches, period pain or backaches, during the day, but when it starts to impact your sleep, it can become an even bigger issue.

And given that “reduced or fractured sleep can also increase your sensitivity to pain”, according to pharmacist Pippa Beeley, learning how to manage pain effectively is important.

The great news is that we can reduce pain at home, day or night, in many ways.

“Pain relief is available in lots of different forms, including soluble tablets”, says Pippa. Over-the-counter pain relief medication such as paracetamol and ibuprofen can both help to relieve minor ailments such as such as aches and pains of colds, headaches and muscle pain.

Other pain-relieving methods include:

REST: Getting plenty of rest allows our body the time it needs to repair as much as possible.

EXERCISE: Gentle exercise, such as low-impact activities like swimming and cycling, can help us manage our pain levels.

TEMPERTURE THERAPY: Cold therapy, like ice or heat therapy, like a hot water bottle can help with the muscle or joint pain and period cramps.

HEALTHY BEDTIME HABITS: Avoiding screens before bed and sleeping at a reasonable hour each night are just some ways to manage night-time pain.

Pippa says, “Avoid screen time an hour before going to bed. This includes your phone, TV, or computer screens. This reduces the risk of digital eyestrain, which is a trigger of headaches.”

Remember, while these tips could help ease minor ailments, it’s essential to consult a doctor for a proper diagnosis and treatment if your condition is severe or you’re unsure about your symptoms.

If you have any other questions, consult your local pharmacy team.
