Gardai set to launch murder probe after body found in Naas, Co Kildare, as victim named locally

Gardai are set to launch a murder investigation after the discovery of a missing man.

The victim, who has been named locally as Shane Knott (36), was discovered in the back garden of a house at Eustace Demesne in Naas, Co Kildare, after 1pm on Sunday.

Sources say gardai suspect Mr Knott, who was not from the area, was struck with a blunt force instrument. Mr Knott is understood to have been reported missing a number of days ago.

There are now fears that he may have lain dead in Naas for a number of days. Gardai are understood to have been alerted to the scene by a man known to the suspect.

The man known to the suspect has alleged to Gardai that he told him he had killed a man. The information led Gardai to the house on Sunday.

Gardai are now awaiting the result of a post mortem examination but are set to launch a full murder investigation.

The suspect was arrested at the address on Sunday and remains in Garda custody on Monday afternoon. The man is known to gardai.

Shocked locals said they did not know the deceased and heard no commotion before seeing Gardai outside the property. However, locals said they knew the arrested man and said there had been issues in the area.

Gardai have since been seen searching bins around the estate and carrying out door-to-door enquiries.
