It’s believed that Dr Holohan won his new job through an open competition having previously been at the centre of a messy appointment to a University post that never actually went ahead, but the HSE has declined to comment, instead saying the process to fill the role was ‘still ongoing’.
However Dr Holohan is said to be the preferred candidate for the job with the National Cancer Control Programme, that works to prevent and treat cancer as well as increasing the survival rates and quality of life for those fighting the disease.

Previously, Dr Holohan’s role with CervicalCheck caused controversy when he advised the then Minister for Health Simon Harris against carrying out a review of the programme, instead saying he’d prepare a report himself a day after Vicky Phelan stood on the steps of the High Court and exposed the screening programme for its failings that led to her terminal cancer.
Minister Harris ignored his direction, and ordered a review that same day.

There was also controversy surrounding his proposed appointment to Trinity College, when it emerged that he would still be an employee of the Department of Health and would also be exclusively personally involved in the decision making process for funding for his secondment.
It he does secure the new post with the NCCP, it will involve a massive pay hike, as in the role of CMO he was earning more than €187,000 a year, while this new position has a salary range of up to €70,000 more.
Dr Tony Holohan Emer Holohan death wife work
Since he stepped down as CMO, Dr Holohan’s wife, Dr Emer Holohan, died after a long battle with a rare form of blood cancer.
He has since found love again with new partner, yoga instructor Ciara Cronin. The couple went public with their relationship in September last year, and even spent Christmas together with Dr Holohan’s kids Clodagh and Ronan.
He explained ‘When life gives you a second chance you better grab it with both hands… and Ciara is my second chance.’
