Trudeau visits Toronto Holocaust Museum as Jewish Canadians mark Yom HaShoah
This was a Torah that was rescued from a burning synagogue that a Jewish, sorry, an American chaplain ended up getting it and giving it to Rabbi Gunther Plout, who was in the US military at the time. And so it made its way to Toronto after the war. And so this fragment of a Torah that was rescued, So it’s really powerful symbol of the ongoing, you know, Jewish resiliency and commitment to ritual despite everything. Of course the story unfolds. We have a number of yellow stars here. Of course, the community was forced to so on South to isolate them. There’s artifacts and drawers, so Jews had to get a Jake stamped on their passport and their names were taken away. They were either given the names Abraham or Sarah. Stripping away their identity. Making them just known as Jews. So this is the first of the meanwhile in Canada. So we talked about the Christie Pitts riot, which of course happened in 1933. And this is a really powerful photo.
