Trudeau announces creation of commissioner for Modern Treaty Implementation
Our government has been serious in our obligations to set out and obligations set out in modern treaties. We’re committed to fully embody true nation to nation and Inuit crown relationships and to make sure we see results. We have Co developed the collaborative modern treaty implementation policy last year, which was the first year we gathered formally in this structure, although we had a good set up meetings in the years before. We agreed on an independent oversight and accountability mechanism to ensure the government is living up to the spirit and intent of those Treaties, so today I am extremely happy to announce that together we will be moving forward to create a Commissioner for modern Treaty implementation as an agent of Parliament. The Commissioner will undertake reviews and performance audits that will ensure that the Government is held to account and future governments are held to account on the implementation of the modern Treaties and to support the functions of the Commissioner and to stand up. The Office will providing over $10 million over the next four years. This is a lasting commitment to be a better Treaty partner.
