Plus de 700 personnes ont traversé illégalement la Manche pour rejoindre le Royaume-Uni ce mercredi. Un record cette année, en plein durcissement face aux migrants côté britannique.

Plus de 700 migrants sont arrivés au Royaume-Uni mercredi 1er mai sur des petits bateaux après avoir traversé la Manche, un record pour 2024 alors que le gouvernement britannique a érigé en priorité de mettre fin à ces traversées.

Selon des chiffres du ministère de l’Intérieur publiés jeudi, 711 migrants, sur 14 bateaux, ont traversé mercredi le bras de mer qui sépare la Grande-Bretagne de l’Europe occidentale. Le précédent record pour 2024, le 14 avril, avait vu 534 personnes effectuer la périlleuse traversée.

Expulsions vers le Rwanda

C’est sans compter 66 migrants, dont des femmes et des enfants, secourus mercredi au large de Dieppe, en France, alors que leur embarcation était en difficulté. Ils ont été ramenés à Dieppe, selon les autorités françaises.

À quelques mois des élections législatives, le gouvernement conservateur britannique a fait une priorité de la fin de ces traversées de la Manche par des migrants.

Une loi controversée, adoptée le 23 avril, vise à pouvoir expulser vers le Rwanda des milliers d’entre eux d’ici à la fin de l’année. Leur demande d’asile serait étudiée au Rwanda, sans possibilité pour eux de revenir au Royaume-Uni, quel qu’en soit le résultat.

Vagues d’arrestations de migrants

En préparation de ces expulsions prévues pour commencer dans 9 à 11 semaines, plusieurs opérations ont été menées cette semaine à l’échelle nationale pour arrêter un nombre non précisé de migrants en situation irrégulière. Le ministère de l’Intérieur a publié des photos, montrant des hommes menottés et escortés dans des camionnettes grillagées. Le gouvernement insiste sur le caractère dissuasif de cette loi.

Les traversées de la Manche ont battu un record historique pour les quatre premiers mois de 2024, avec l’arrivée de plus de 8.000 migrants sur les côtes anglaises, dont une majorité originaire d’Afghanistan, d’Iran et de Turquie.
