The challenge of Transformers toys is to learn how to convert them from one mode to the other, even if the process is much faster in the franchise’s various media. Thankfully, Robosen’s automated and licensed Transformers toys roll out in real time, and the dastardly leader of the Decepticons is now part of that number.
The latest self-converting figure from robotics/electronics company Robosen, this Megatron figure is far more than meets the eye. Replicating his Generation 1 form (with a twist), it’s a version of Megatron unlike any that fans have ever collected. Transforming on its own and boasting with the raspy voice of Frank Welker, the toy is ready to take on its Autobot enemies such as Optimus Prime and Grimlock.

Megatron Is the Latest Self-Transforming Transformers Toy in Robosen’s Lineup

Revealed on April 25, 2024, the Megatron figure from Robosen is one of several similar licensed Transformers produced by the company. The figure transforms from a tank to a robot, both evoking and updating his classic form. Although the tank form is different and far more locomotive than his classic Walter P-38 gun mode, the gray/silver color scheme and his robot mode design are clear updates of Generation 1. This goes beyond just his appearance, however, with Megatron also sounding just like he did in the original Transformers cartoon.
Megatron has various sound bites and responses to commands, with these voice clips supplied by none other than his classic voice actor, Frank Welker. One such line is “Such heroic nonsense!” — an iconic phrase uttered by the Decepticon in The Transformers: The Movie. Megatron responds to touch and voice prompts, with fans being able to command him into transforming by merely saying as such. Of course, he wouldn’t be ready for battle without his trust cannon, which still rests on his arm in robot mode. Robosen also created two other self-converting toys for Optimus Prime and Grimlock. A similar toy for Bumblebee was also made by the company, though it doesn’t transform.

Transformers Is Celebrating the Brand’s 40th Anniversary
The announcement of the Robosen Megatron figure comes at the perfect time given the status of the franchise as a whole. Transformers is celebrating 40 years on shelves and in the pop culture space, with the original iteration of the brand debuting in 1984. Many of these figures were simply repackaged versions of toys from the Microchange and Diaclone toy line from Japan, with Megatron being an example of a figure hailing from the former. Originally turning into a realistic handgun, toy laws necessitated a change for the Decepticon leader. Since Transformers: Generation 2, Megatron has mostly been associated with having a tank as an alternate mode.
Beyond the Robosen figure, other toys are also being released to commemorate the occasion. Many of these are part of the Transformers: Legacy toy line, which features characters from various continuities and timelines. This includes several versions of Megatron, with the line being home to figures for the Transmetal II dragon Megatron from Beast Wars: Transformers — a diminutive Core Class representation of Transformers: Energon Megatron and the Voyager Class and Leader Class Transformers: War for Cybertron Megatron and Transformers: Armada Megatron, both of which turn into tanks. The Armada Megatron can also combine with parts of the Transformers: Legacy Tidal Wave toy, replicating scenes from that anime.
