Kishori Lal Sharma, Congress’ Amethi candidate, has refused to wade into a row over his candidacy, citing his humble background and “good values”. Sharma was recently called “Rahul Gandhi’s chaprasi” by the Bharatiya Janata Party’s (BJP) Raebareli candidate Dinesh Pratap Singh.

“If he (Gandhi) wanted to win Amethi, would they give a ticket to his chaprasi (peon),” the Uttar Pradesh minister said during an interview.

When asked about it, Sharma said, “These are their values, my father was illiterate, but he taught me good values. I don’t want to comment on this.” His remarks came during an interview with NDTV while on an election campaign.

During the interview, he also said that despite his nomination from the seat, he still wanted a Gandhi to fight from the seat.

Amethi, historically a stronghold of the Congress party, boasts a legacy of representation by prominent figures such as Sanjay Gandhi, Rajiv Gandhi, and Sonia Gandhi. However, Rahul Gandhi’s consecutive victories in the constituency were interrupted by his defeat to the BJP’s Smriti Irani in the 2019 elections, intensifying the electoral dynamics in the region.

With the forthcoming elections, Amethi, along with Raebareli, remains a key focus for the Congress, representing significant battlegrounds in Uttar Pradesh.

Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, a prominent Congress leader, has taken charge of overseeing the party’s campaign efforts in these crucial constituencies.

Meanwhile, the BJP has nominated Smriti Irani once again as its candidate, indicating the party’s determination to maintain its hold over these constituencies. Irani has suggested that the decision of the Gandhis not to contest the seats reflects an acknowledgment of their potential defeat.
